In October 1961 President John F Kennedy signed into law May 15 as Law Enforcement Memorial Day. Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect with courage and dedication. Three Huron Police officers made the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Huron, and their names are engraved on a memorial located on the south side of the Huron Police Department. Those three officers, who died in the line of duty, are Clifford Hawley, Sept. 9, 1909; Virgil Deyo, Nov. 29, 1966; and Thomas Callies, March 30, 1982. This year’s flowers at the memorial were donated by Wal-Mart.For the complete article see the 05-19-2013 issue.
