Sandra Mencke, president, and Pat Coyle, Poppy Day chairman of the Huron American Legion Auxiliary Unit Post No. 7 were present when Mayor Paul Aylward declared May 24-25 as Poppy Days in Huron.

The auxiliary will distribute poppies at local stores in Huron on Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25. The money raised from the distribution is used for veterans’ rehabilitation. In addition to the therapy of making these poppies, veterans earn a small amount of spending money. Veteran’s programs are the principle mission of the American Legion Auxiliary, the world’s largest women’s patriotic organization.

Have you read the poppy story about the delicate flowers growing wild in a war-torn field in Flanders Field?

Imagine — a muddy field, with injured and dead lying on the ground. Hear the gunshots. Then picture bright red flowers growing up out of the muddy ground. Poppies spread like wildfires on the battlefields.

It is only fitting that money realized from the distribution of these memorial flowers be designated for the veterans who have served and sacrificed and for their children, who have also sacrificed. Each year volunteer workers offer these poppies to the public. As a grateful nation we remember that all gave some and some gave all. Wearing a poppy pays tribute and honors the nation’s war heroes who gave their all for freedom.
