Students present piano recitals, receive NFMC awards

Students of Beverly J. Bigge presented “Themes — Famous and Fun” in two piano recitals held May 8 at the Centennial Center. The recitals were held in conjunction with the National Federation of Music Clubs National Music Week.

Sloane Mack, daughter of Barry and Teri Mack, was awarded the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) fourth gold cup at the awards ceremony. She was also awarded the NFMC “Scroll of Congratulations” in honor or her high musical achievement in the National Federation Festivals.

Katie Davis, daughter of Tricia Davis; Tierra Decker, daughter of Jeff and Teresa Decker; and Nicole Hamilton, daughter of Scott and Paula Hamilton, received third gold cups.

Second gold cup winners were Landon Claeys, Tierra Decker (piano duet), April Hamilton, Arthur Hines, Brooke Mallon and Henry Rubish. First gold cup winners were Katrina Baltzer, Kevin Baltzer, Katie Davis (piano duet), and Brylee Eden.

Jessica Wegenke, daughter of Kevin and Maureen Wegenke, received special recognition from the National Guild of Piano Teachers as she was named to the Five-Year National roll. She played 10 or more memorized pieces for five years. Other students who were declared 2013 National winners were Kevin and Emily Wedel. Katrina Baltzer was declared an International winner after playing 15 memorized pieces.

Students receiving the Music Teachers National Association Study Award for the most years of study included: Six years: Landon Claeys, Jaime O’Neill, Henry Rubish, Abby Thomas and Emily Wedel; seven years: Lindsey Friedrichsen and Elaine Hines; eight years: Elisebeth Dickson, April Hamilton, Kami Love and Brooke Mallon; nine years: Tierra Decker, Nicole Hamilton, Megan Rawstern and Jessica Wegenke; ten years: Cassidy Entwisle, Arthur Hines, Erin Scheibe, John Waldner and Alexander Zell; eleven years: Katie Davis and Jessica Hofer; and twelve years: Sloane Mack.

Graduating seniors Katie Davis and Jessica Hofer received special recognition for their many accomplishments.

Awards were presented to students who participated in the South Dakota Bandmasters contests, NFMC Junior Music Festival and National Piano Playing Auditions. Students were given awards for their performances at nursing homes, church, school and community events.

Bigge is a nationally certified teacher of music with both the Music Teachers National Association and the American College of Musicians. She maintains a private studio in Huron.
