Brookings records sweep in twinbill against Post 7

BROOKINGS — After taking a 3-0 lead, Brookings Post 74 added seven runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning for a 12-2 victory against Huron Post 7 in the opening game of an American Legion baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at Bob Sheldon Field.

Wyatt Shillingstad had two of the seven hits in the game for Post 7, while Cole Peterson, Paul Cramer and John Hott each had doubles.

Huron collected a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings on hits by Tristan Hamilton and Shillingstad.

Matt Johnson started on the mound and pitched the first 3 2/3 innings for Post 7. He allowed nine runs, three of which were earned, on six hits, while striking out two and walking five.

Hott pitched the final 2/3 innings in relief, allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout and four walks.

Brookings recorded the sweep with a 16-5 victory in five innings during the nightcap.

Huron managed just three hits in the second game, while Post 74 had 12 hits.

After scoring the first seven runs, Brookings offset a four-run third inning by Post 7 with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to build a 13-4 advantage.

Huron put its final run on the board in the fourth inning, before Post 74 answered with three runs in its half of the inning to push its lead into double digits at 16-5.

Damen Robish and Zack Cranston had two RBIs for Post 7, while Collin Boehrns had an RBI.

Hartman Katz pitched the first 3 1/3 innings for Huron, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.

Cramer pitched the final 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on two hits, with four walks and no strikeouts.

Post 7 will now be off until it travels to face Aberdeen in a doubleheader on June 18.
