Police officer Mark Johnson was awarded the Officer of the Year award for the state of South Dakota at the state Veterans of Foreign Wars annual convention held in Watertown He was nominated by the local VFW Post 1776.
Johnson is a Huron native and has been employed with the Huron Police Department since May 2008. He has a degree in criminal justice from the University of North Dakota.
He put together the Citizenís Police Academy, two DEA-sponsored drug take back events, the National Night Out and other community programs.
Johnson has also received the Life Saving Award.
