FORESTBURG — Today, July 6, 2013, the new Ruskin Park sign will be unveiled one mile southeast of Forestburg at 3 p.m. The original sign marking the famous park, known for its dance hall, race track (“one of the fastest one-mile race tracks around”) and summer cottages, went missing in the 1980’s.

However, many people with memories of Ruskin Park in its glory days have banded together to pitch in and keep those memories alive with the purchase of the new Ruskin Park sign.

In its day, Ruskin Park’s glass dance pavilion was a favorite gathering place recognized for its rock-and-roll bands, the relationships and friendships that were ignited there and the fights that would occasionally break out. It was inducted into the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 24, 2010.

Those who performed at the dance pavilion included the nationally-known Conway Twitty, Jerry Lee Lewis, regional bands such as Roscoe and his Little Green Men, Teen King and the Princes, and many others.

The park was closed in 1968.

As the South Dakota Rock and Roll Music Association website states, “The buildings are now gone, but the wonderful memories live on.”

For more information on the unveiling of the new sign, contact Vic Zimmerman at 714-865-6594.
