HURON - The top WISSOTA modified drivers will be at Dakota State Fair Speedway tonight as the Advantage RV Modified Tour makes its lone stop of the 2013 season at the Huron oval.
Tonight’s event, which gets under way at 7 p.m. and will also include the WISSOTA Midwest modifieds and street stocks, is part of the tour’s Hot Summer Nights swing.
“The last couple years this swing has had 40-plus cars at each event,” said Reuben Meyer, who is the tour director.
The Hot Summer Nights swing began Thursday at KRA Speedway in Willmar, Minn., and headed to Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen on Friday night. Following tonight’s program at DSFS the swing will conclude at Casino Speedway in Watertown on Sunday.
Tonight’s 30-lap feature race will pay $1,500 to the winner, which lends itself to attracting the top drivers.
“I would say out of the top 15 drivers in the standings, we should see at least 14 of those guys,” Meyer said. “We should have somewhere between 36-40 cars, which is my goal.”
Heading into the first night of the Hot Summer Nights swing, Matt Gilbertson of Montevideo, Minn., was the leader in the tour’s point standings with 154 points. Dave Mass of Insanti, Minn., was second, just four points behind the leader.
Rounding out the top five in the point standings after the first three events on the tour were Mike Stearns of Hecla, Dale Mathison of Clearwater, Minn., and Justin Jones of Bemidji, Minn.
Stearns, who won the feature race on Thursday in Willmar, had 141 points, while Mathison and Jones had 138 and 137 points, respectively.
“The big thing that is interesting this year is some of the young guns that have come on tour - Tyler McDonald of Huron and Brent Dutenhoffer of Watertown,” Meyer said. “Then we’ve had some new stars that have joined on with the tour this year — Travis Saurer of Elizabeth, Minn., and Dale Mathison.”
McDonald was 11th in the tour standings entering Thursday’s race in Willmar, while Saurer was eighth.
Cody Skytland of Fargo, N.D., was the main event winner during the tour’s stop at Norman County Raceway in Ada, Minn. On May 23. He is 17th in the standings.
Jason Grimes of Jamestown, N.D., was the feature winner at the event on May 25 at Jamestown Speedway. He is ninth in the standings.
Kelly Estey of Kelly Lake, Minn., claimed the main event win during the tour stop at Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, Minn., on June 19.
Following the Hot Summer Nights swing, the tour will return to Ogilvie Raceway to begin the August Ambush on Aug. 8.
The August Ambush also includes stops at Fiesta City Speedway in Montevideo on Aug. 9, Madison Speedway in Madison, Minn., on Aug. 10 and Casino Speedway in Watertown on Aug. 11.
The Advantage RV Modified Tour will hold its Race for the Axe on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minn., before closing with the Finals Shootout.
The Finals Shootout will include a stop at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen on Sept. 6 and back-to-back shows at Casino Speedway in Watertown on Sept. 7-8.
