HURON — For a second straight year, the Huron Soccer Association will kick off its season with an Alumni Game at Pepsi Fields Soccer Complex.
This year’s event is slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday and will be held in conjunction with the Huron Soccer Association fall soccer registration for ages 10 and up.
“We’d like this thing to get bigger and better every year,” said Gary Kasperson, who serves as the coach for the Huron High School soccer team and organizer for the alumni game. “It’s just a fun way to kind of jump start the season, with practice for the varsity teams beginning on Aug. 5.”
Kasperson is hoping enough players will show up for the event, which will include a lunch for all participants, to create two teams.
“Anyone who has ever been involved with the Huron Soccer Association in any way whatsoever is welcome and encouraged to participate,” he said.
Last season, the alumni squad was a bit short on numbers so it had to recruit a team that was already playing at the complex to play in the inaugural event. He said he does have another team lined up this year, but hopes it won’t be needed.
“Once kids are done with school, soccer pretty much goes by the wayside,” Kasperson said. “This is a good way for players to meet up with former teammates and other soccer enthusiasts.”
A second fall soccer registration is planned from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Putters and Scoops at Ravine Lake.
Items needed for registration include copy of birth certificate, recent small photo, registration fee, uniform deposit and fundraiser deposit. Financial assistance is available upon request.
