Joseph Pederson, 82, of Carthage

CARTHAGE Joseph Pederson, 82, of Carthage, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at Avera Mckennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carthage, with burial in Pleasantview Cemetery, Carthage. The Rev. LeShea Avery will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joseph Dwaine Pederson was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Leeds, N.D. to Tom and Ethel (Hardin) Pederson.

He worked on the family farm before joining the Marine Corps on Jan. 4, 1952, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 3, 1954.

He married Donnamae Ella Bushman on Dec. 11, 1954, in Sioux Falls. She died on April 12, 1984.

He later married Denise Brummett on June 28, 1985 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carthage. They lived in Carthage where he was a self-employed mechanic, bus driver and later worked for the PBM Company in Howard.

He enjoyed hunting, tinkering, and car racing, especially NASCAR. He was also the mayor of Carthage during the 100th Jubilee and later the 125th Jubilee. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Graves Wollman American Legion Post in Carthage, and the Commander and adjutant commander of the Post. He also was on the Carthage Volunteer Fire Dept. and a driver for the Carthage ambulance for numerous years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Donnamae; a son, James Pederson; a daughter, Susan Pederson and a sister, Sonja Pederson.

He is survived by his wife, Denise, of Carthage; two sons, Alan (Bev) Pederson of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Bret Pederson of Mitchell; a daughter, Ashley (Jamie) Coffman of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronnie (Irene) Pederson of Aurora, Ill.; three sisters, Vivian Amen of Lake Norden; Delores (Dave) Ames of Miller; Carol (Ron) Rhodes of Mountain Home, Ark.; a mother-in-law, Mae Brummett of Howard and the rest of his family and friends.
