Donald B. Solem, 85, of Huron

HURON Donald B. Solem, 85, of Huron, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at his home.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom, Minn.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. at LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom.

Donald B. Solem was born Nov. 16, 1927, in Windom to Harry Alfred and Ruth Edrie (Rolph) Solem. He was baptized at an early age at the Church of the Messiah in St. Paul. He received his education in the Windom Public Schools; graduating with the Class of 1946. He served in the Army until being honorably discharged. He returned to Windom and attended Worthington Junior College, where he was on the state football team. After two years in Worthington, he began attending the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis for one year.

On May 18, 1957, he married Eva Kathleen Ray in Windom. They moved to Bingham Lake, Colo., in the fall of 1958. For 30 years he was the Postmaster in Bingham Lake until retiring on July 27, 1990. They continued to live in Bingham Lake until recently when they decided to move to Huron to be closer to their son, Doug.

He was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom where he was chairman of the board of directors and held several other offices. He also was active in his community as a longtime member of the American Legion Post No. 206, where he helped on the honor guard for funerals for many years, was the commander from 1978-1980 and 2nd District Adjunct in 1985 and 1992; he was a member of the Bingham Lake City Council; served on the fire department from 1959-1985 where he was the fire chief for many years; and helped found the Windom Hockey Association and served on its board of directors.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Solem of Huron; three children, Stephen (Joan) Solem of Grove City, Suzanne (Mark) Palen of Shoreview, and Douglas (Laurie) Solem of Huron; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Robert, John and Thomas Solem.
