DE SMET — U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) met with representatives from Horizon Health Care, Inc. (Horizon) and Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas (CHAD) on Aug. 21, at the recently completed De Smet Community Health Center.

“It was great to get a first-hand look at De Smet’s new Community Health Center which, like many community health centers across the state, provides high-quality primary health care to folks in medically underserved communities,” said Johnson. “Community Health Centers will now play an expanded role by providing education, outreach and enrollment support to uninsured South Dakotans utilizing the new Health Insurance Marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act.”

Johnson, a long-time supporter of Community Health Centers, recently supported the Senate’s FY 2014 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill which, combined with the mandatory funding provided under the Affordable Care Act, would increase funding for Community Health Centers by $700 million.

“It was a great honor to have Senator Johnson take time out of his busy schedule to meet with us and tour our new De Smet Community Health Center,” said John Mengenhausen, CEO of Horizon Health Care. “Senator Johnson has been a longtime supporter of Horizon and is one of the main reasons De Smet Community Health Center exists today.”
