HURON — Thursday’s Family Night in Campbell Park not only made an exception to the rule of not talking with a mouth full, but encouraged those in attendance to sample homemade pies and sing karaoke while doing so.

Sponsored by Huron Sertoma Club, Wells Fargo, YWCA, and the Plainsman, the evening held competition to see who could bake the best pie. Mayor Paul Aylward, the Rev. Andrew Crandall of First Presbyterian Church, and Shirley Apley, director of the Huron Public Library, judged the competition.

“We had about 12 pies entered in the contest and about that many donated,” said Deannie LeRoux of Fair City Sertoma Club.

“And the ice cream was also supplied to us at cost.”

The Karaoke Krooners of Sioux Falls supplied the music for the night, and took requests from the crowd.

“It was actually Mary Moe who heard of them,” said Lisa Wolf, of the Campbell Park Family.

“They play at singles dances and go around to nursing homes, too.”

The first place winner of the pie competition went to Paula Pederson of Miller, whose Sour Cream Peach pie delighted the judges pallets.

Second place went to Huron’s Marodean Decker and her rhubarb pie. Grace Hornig’s Golden Delicious pie took third place, Nancy Toffelmire’s pie placed fourth, and Marianne Cole’s apple pie rounded out the winners, taking fifth place.

Roger Kasa and his daughter, Lisa Wolf, took to the stage after the pie contest to draw names for door prizes.

Thursday Night’s Pie in the Park concludes the weekly summer gathering for 2013. Those who entered pies in the contest but were unable to retrieve their pie dishes at the park can pick them up at the YWCA after 9 a.m. today. The winning recipes will be published in Saturday’s paper.
