HURON — After snapping a long losing skid against Brookings earlier this season, the Huron Tiger girls’ tennis team ended another long losing streak on Thursday during a triangular at Winter Park Courts.

The Tigers recorded a 6-3 victory against the Pierre Lady Govs to earn their fourth victory of the season.

“Mike (Knigge) and I were talking and it has been a long time since we’ve beat Pierre,” Huron coach Mike Wever said. “The girls all played pretty well today.”

Huron set the tone in the match against the Lady Govs by winning two of the three doubles matches. Bailey Harvey and Cassie Hedblom combined for a 10-3 victory in No. 3 doubles, while Claire Hoogland and Alison Fenske used a tiebreaker to win the No. 2 doubles 11-10 for the Tigers.

Huron clinched the match by winning four of the six singles matches.

Fenske won 11-9 at No. 3 for the Tigers, while Harvey cruised to a 10-0 win in No. 4 singles. Hoogland inked a 10-2 victory in No. 5 singles and Hedblom recorded a 10-5 win at No. 6.

In Thursday’s other match, Huron suffered a 6-3 setback against Watertown.

“We had a big win in doubles against Watertown,” Wever said.

Huron’s No. 1 tandem of Michelle Johnson and Sierra Goergen, who had went winless in both singles and doubles against Pierre, rebounded with a 10-2 victory in doubles against Watertown. It was the team’s lone doubles victory.

Goergen also accounted for one of two wins for the Tigers in singles with a 10-8 decision at No. 2. Hedblom posted a 10-2 win at No. 6 for the other singles victory.

Huron, which is now 4-6, will participate in the Aberdeen Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
