SIOUX FALLS — John Penney, 85, of Sioux Falls, died on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Sanford Medical Center. He resided at Trail Ridge Retirement Community in Sioux Falls.
John Penney was born to Bernard and Etta (Williams) Penney on Sept. 30, 1927, on the family farm near De Smet.
He was drafted into the Marine Corps and served during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he returned to De Smet and worked in road construction. He then moved to Huron and operated a trailer park.
He married Ruby Miller. The couple remained in Huron and he continued in road construction.
He spent many nights at the Arkota Ballroom and other senior dances in his later years. He enjoyed senior activities and groups. He visited every state in the U.S. except one.
He is survived by his siblings, Mary Johnson of Arlington, James (Audrey) Penney of De Smet, Lee Roy Penney of Arlington, Bernadine (James) Koehntopp of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; extended family, Doug (Marilyn) Miller and Jack (Barb) Cannon; special friend, Illa Berg of Sioux Falls; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Alvin, Bernetta, and Leonard.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at the Miller Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at the Woodlawn Cemetery.
