SC-W, Miller aim for state tourney berths

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 13th, 2013

HURON — A pair of area volleyball teams will make their bid to reach the state tournament today and both will be facing steep odds in accomplishing the feat.

Despite hosting the Region 3B title match at 7 p.m. today in Forestburg, Sanborn Central-Woonsocket will be meeting one of the top teams in the state, Arlington.

Arlington brings a 28-1 record into the match.

The Cardinals lone loss of the season came against top-ranked Warner early in the season. Since Sept. 14, Arlington has won 22 consecutive matches.

Sanborn Central-Woonsocket struggled down the stretch, dropping four of its last five matches, but gathered things up to make its way to the District 6B title.

The Lady Blackhawks are 17-10 entering tonight’s match.

The Region 3B champion will advance to the Class B State Tournament, which is scheduled Nov. 21-23 at Huron Arena.

Miller also faces a monumental task, when it faces top-seeded Winner for the Region 6A title at 7 p.m. today in Fort Pierre.

Winner went 23-3 during the regular season, which included a victory against the Rustlers at the Stanley County Tournament in Fort Pierre.

The Warriors then dispatched Chamberlain in the region’s semifinals to bring a 24-3 mark into today’s match.

Miller went 19-8 during the regular season and defeated third-seed Mobridge-Polock in the semifinals to reach the title match.

The Region 6A champion will earn a spot in the Class A State Tournament, which is scheduled Nov. 21-23 in Aberdeen.
