HURON — For the first time in recent history, the Huron volleyball team placed three players on first team of the All-Eastern South Dakota Conference team.
Earning spots on the All-ESD squad, which was announced Thursday, were seniors Asia King, Halee Allerdings and Kelly McCarty.
“It just shows what this team has accomplished, having three on the first team,” Huron coach Shelly Buddenhagen said. “I don’t think we’ve done that in the past five years.”
While three of Huron’s four seniors were honored by the ESD, Buddenhagen said all four of them were deserving of the honor in her mind.
“Our seniors have been the heart and soul for us this season,” she said of the group, which also included Lizzy Katz. “These seniors have really paved the way and had a remarkable season. With their leadership ability and their skill, we think those are the best three players in the conference.”
King finished the season with a team-high 242 kills for the Tigers. She also had 42 aces and 54 total blocks.
Allerdings also surpassed the 200-kill mark with 234 and had 31 aces to go alsong with 24 total blocks.
McCarty amassed 639 assists on 2,003 set and finished with a team-high 57 asces.
The rest of the All-ESD first team consisted of Brianna Kusler of Aberdeen Central, Taylin Alm of Mitchell Kaitlyn Severyn of Pierre, Taylor Murtha of Brandon Valley, Maddie Goetz of Aberdeen Central, Macy Denzer of Watertown, Alyssa Tvedt of Brookings, Emma Schmidt of Mitchell and Becky Frick of Yankton.
Earning honorable mention were Bridget White and Meggie Hanson of Aberdeen Central; Lexi Hoover and Hannah Stensrud of Brandon Valley; Sara Tvedt of Brookings; Jordan Beiswanger, Samantha Slaughter and Hailey Axtell of Harrisburg; Sidney Neugebauer of Mitchell; Carly Jo Schroer and Whitney King of Pierre; and Megan Pfeifer and McKenzie Werner of Watertown.
