LAKE PRESTON — Donna Jean Smith, 85, of Lake Preston, died on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at Dougherty House Hospice. Visitation will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet. Funeral services will be held on Monday at the United Church of Christ in Lake Preston at 10 a.m. with visitation an hour prior to the services. Osthus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Donna Jean Smith was born on Dec. 17, 1928, to Roy and Marie Hummel. She grew up around Canova and graduated from Burbank Consolidated High School. She then attended Eastern State College (Dakota State University), where she received her teaching certificate.
On June 18, 1961, she married Calvin Smith in Fedora and they settled on a farm between De Smet and Lake Preston. She taught preschool for many years and was an active member of the United Church of Christ, was the superintendent of the Sunday School and part of the Women’s Fellowship.
She is survived by her children, Kathryn (Steve) Smith of Sioux Falls, Kevin Smith of De Smet, and Julie (Tony) Coughlin of De Smet; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin; her sister, Shirley Hummel; and one infant sister.
