HURON — The city’s re-cycling efforts gained even more momentum in January, the best month yet, with 44,000 pounds of recyclables collected in the blue-yellow recycling containers and bins.
The solid waste department said that is an average of 33 pounds per container.
As a reminder, items that are not illustrated on the lid should not go in the container unless a call is made to the department first.
The most frequent violations are bagged recyclables not needing to be bagged and black bags containing recyclables. Bags that are semitransparent or clear should be used when bagging shredded paper or other film plastics.
Pizza boxes and Styrofoam are also not recyclable because of food and grease on the cardboard boxes and the shredding nature of Styrofoam that contaminates the rest of the items.
As of Monday, 1,724 blue-yellow containers had been distributed. The goal is to reach 3,000 containers, with 80 percent of them out for collection in any given week. Residents are reminded that the containers should be at least one-fourth full when placed at the collection point. For the complete article see the 02-12-2014 issue.
