Volesky decides against entering U.S. Senate race

Ron Volesky

HURON — Ron Volesky of Huron has announced he will not seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate this year.

“After many long discussions and much thought and prayer, my wife and I came to a family decision that it would be best if I did not seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate at this time,” he said.

“With three boys in college and a daughter in high school, my wife and I felt that I simply had too many family responsibilities at this time to be devoting the time and effort it would take to conduct an effective statewide campaign for the United States Senate,” Volesky said.

A veteran of the state Legislature and one-time Democratic candidate for governor, Volesky said he is endorsing and supporting Rick Weiland in the race.

“I look forward to an exciting race for the U.S. Senate in 2014,” he said, “and hope that throughout the campaign season I will have an opportunity from time to time to campaign for Mr. Weiland.”

He said Weiland will be an excellent candidate for the Democratic party in its effort to retain Sen. Tim Johnson’s seat.

“Rick has a wealth of political experience throughout South Dakota and he is also familiar with the workings of Washington, and I know that he would work hard and be effective in representing the interests of the people of our state,” Volesky said.
