Baltzer wins second place in piano competition

The Twentieth Annual Genevieve Truran Piano Competition for Grades 8-12 was held Feb. 22 at the University of South Dakota.

Pianists from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota competed for cash awards in each age group.

Kevin Baltzer, the son of Monte and Sheri Baltzer of Alpena was the second place winner in grade 8. He received a cash award of $100.

Baltzer is a student of Beverly Bigge of Huron.The competition is named for Genevieve Truran, a native of Pierre, who taught piano at USD on a full-time basis for 47 years. The Genevieve and John Truran Endowed Fund supports the competition as well as other USD keyboard activities, including a number of University piano scholarships.

The adjudicator for the event was Paul Kenyon who is a member of the music faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif.
