S.D. Partners in Policymaking visit Pierre

Gov. Dennis Daugaard recently visited with the S.D. Partners in Policy-making Class of 2014. Partners in Policymaking is a six-month training course, one weekend per month, from November through April. Sessions are held in Pierre and Sioux Falls.

Attending from Huron were Brenda Dean, Katey Peschl, and Jamie Never Misses A Shot.

This statewide training is for adults with developmental disabilities and parents/family members of individuals with disabilities.

It is a national program and is now in its 22nd year in South Dakota.

South Dakota Advocacy Services conducts the program with grants from the Council on Develop-mental Disabilities, USD Center for Disabilities, Children’s Care Hospital & School and S.D. Parent Connection.

Since the programs inception in South Dakota, more than 300 individuals have completed the empowerment and self-advocacy training.

Participants in the January session learned about the legislature, had the opportunity to provide mock testimony to state senators and representatives, met with the Governor and toured the Capitol.

South Dakota Advocacy Services provides administrative and legal remedies to individuals with disabilities. The agency works in the field of mental health, developmental disabilities, abuse and neglect, housing, vocational rehabilitation, Social Security, employment, discrimination, etc.
