The 15th Annual South Dakota Music Educators Association Middle School All-State Band was held in Pierre Feb. 28-March 1. Dr. Eric Peterson from South Dakota State University was the guest conductor for the Festival Band, and renowned band composer Robert Sheldon was the guest composer of the Honor Band.

This two day event drew 191 students from 67 schools throughout South Dakota.

Two Huron Middle School band students were selected to participate in this year’s bands — Kevin Baltzer (horn) was selected to the Honor Band, and Meredith Ollerich (trumpet) was selected to the Festival Band.

Sheldon was commissioned by the SDMEA to compose a work to commemorate the 15th annual event.

The World Premier of his composition, “Intrepid Journey,” was performed by the Honor Band with the composer conducting. Next year’s SDMEA Middle School All-State Band will be held March 6-7 in Huron.
