Six South Dakota high school boys and girls basketball standouts have been selected as the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association’s 2013-14 Players of the Year.
Boys honorees include Steven Schaefer of Rapid City Stevens (Class AA), Trae VandeBerg of Madison (Class A) and Nathan Wedel of James Valley Christian (Class B).
Girls honorees are Macy Miller of Mitchell (Class AA), Keely Bertram of Elk Point-Jefferson (Class A) and Shelby Selland of Sanborn Central-Woonsocket (Class B).
All six are seniors.
Schaefer, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 24 points and five rebounds per game for a Stevens team that went 20-4 and finished fourth in the state Class AA tourney.
VandeBerg, a 6-3 guard, helped Madison go 25-0 and repeat as the state Class A champion, notching 17.7 points and 5.3 points per game.
Wedel, a 6-4 forward, carried James Valley Christian to state Class B boys’ title with a 25-1 record. He produced 19.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
Miller, a 6-0 guard, scored 30.7 points and also tallied 7.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for a Mitchell team that went 23-2 and finished second in the state AA girls’ tourney.
Bertram, a 5-9 forward, tallied 20.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game for Elk Point-Jefferson, which went 22-3 and finished fourth in the state Class A tourney.
Selland, a 6-2 center, carried Sanborn Central-Woonsocket to a 24-2 record and a runner-up finish in the state Class B tourney — notching 18.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.For the complete article see the 04-11-2014 issue.
