HURON — The Huron boys’ tennis team had a pair of victories slip from its grasp on Saturday during a quadrangular at Winter Park Courts.

Sioux Falls Lincoln, which is one of the top teams in the state, handled the Tigers 9-0 in the opening match, while Watertown and Pierre escaped with 5-4 victories.

“We played inspired tennis the entire day, despite going 0-3,” Huron coach Mike Knigge said. “Our team had about a 100 percent turnaround from our matches on Friday, but we also have seen some glaring pitfalls.

“Cleaning up errors, getting serves in and developing good shot selection are things we need to address, but today was a great start,” he said.

After being swept by Lincoln, Huron regrouped for a push for the victory against Watertown.

Colin Claeys and Blake Meyer inked an 8-4 victory in the No. 1 doubles match against the Arrows, while Devon Carroll and Tyler Sterrett used the same score to get past their opponents in the No. 2 doubles match.

“The key to both wins was that we attacked and were the aggressors,” Knigge said. “Blake and Tyler, who were both flat at times Friday, were both making plays, moving their feet more and competing point in and point out.

“Both teams made plays and cleaned up their errors, which in turn, usually means wins,” he said.

Watertown rallied by winning four of the six singles matches to edge the Tigers for the victory. Claeys won 8-6 at No. 1 singles for Huron, while Carroll used an 8-0 decision to win the No. 2 singles.

With one last opportunity against Pierre, the Tigers looked to secure their only win of the day against a team that was swept by Watertown.

“The team continued to play with heart and passion in the final dual, but we came down to earth and began to run out of gas a little,” Knigge said of the match against Pierre, which ended with the Governors escaping the the 5-4 decision. “I didn’t see any quit even when things weren’t going our way.”

Once again, Huron opened a 2-1 lead with a pair of victories in the doubles competition.

Claeys and Meyer won 8-5 at No. 1, while Carroll and Sterrett earned their second win of the day with an 8-2 decision.

Pierre posted victories in four of the six singles matches to second the dual win.

Earning singles wins against Pierre for Huron were Carroll at No. 2 and Sterrett at No. 4.

The Tigers, who are now 1-4, are scheduled to return to action Wednesday with a 2 p.m. dual against Rapid City Central at Winter Park Courts. They then will host Rapid City Central and Mitchell on Thursday.
