HURON ó Long before the annual public fireworks display got under way for the Fourth of July celebration at Dakota State Fair Speedway. Fans were treated to some spectacular action on the 3/8-mile oval.
With just one heat race in the books fans were brought to the edge of their seats as Michael Gapp of Twin Brooks piled his WISSOTA street stock into the wall coming out of turn four. Then barrel rolled twice before coming to rest back on its wheels just short of the flagstand.
Gapp was uninjured during the incident, which would be the first of several to create quite a buzz throughout the grandstands.
The second devastating incident came during the street stock feature race, as Chris Serr of Aberdeen, who was the divisionís points leader, got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the opening lap of the main event he ended up rolling three times as Huronís Doug Songer created a two-car pile-up on the high side of turns one and two to trigger the mishap. Serr walked away uninjured, but visually frustrated as he contemplated how we was going to get another car put together in order to protect his points lead at Casino Speedway in Watertown on Sunday.
Once the street stock feature race resumed, Durand Peterson of Glenwood, Minn., would lead throughout the duration of the 12-lap race to record his first-ever victory at the Huron oval.
Scott Borstad of Volga crossed the line second, but was stripped of his finish for being too light crossing the scale. Borstadís disqualification handed the second spot to Michael Bogh of Huron. Songer was third, followed by Cole Phillips of Winner and Blayne Baloun of St. Lawrence.
Baloun and Bogh won the street stock feature races.
The closest finish of the night came in the WISSOTA Midwest modified division, where Tracy Johnson of Lake Preston held off a fierce challenge by Lorin Johnson of Miller and his brother, Tyler Johnson of Montrose, to earn his third victory of the season and sixth overall at DSFS.
Lorin Johnson would make a last-lap pass to claim the second spot, with Tyler Johnson taking third. Dave Carlson of Huron was fourth, followed by Kyle Knouse of Huron.
Knouse and Brad Kopecky of Miller claimed wins in the Midwest modified heat races.
Scott Ward of Watertown capitalized on the restart three laps into the WISSOTA modified main event and led the final 12 laps for his 13th career victory at DSFS.
Tyler McDonald of Huron, who held a 2-point edge for the lead in the divisionís points standings, finished second, while defending track champion Kent Arment of Aberdeen was third. Rounding out the top five were Nick Grehl of Hitchcock, who led the first three laps, and Chris Prussman of Brookings, who passed Dale Ames of Huron on the high side of turn four on the final lap.
Prussman and Arment won the modified heat race.
The victory in the WISSOTA super stock main event was a long time coming for Jeremy North of Huron.
North snagged the lead from John Kaiser of Lake Norden during a restart on lap three and pulled away over the next 17 laps to secure his second career win at DSFS. His first feature win came eight years earlier.
Defending champ Dustin Arthur of St. Lawrence drove his way from the eighth starting spot to finish second, while Kaiser was third. Mike Jager of Gettysburg was fourth, followed by Cole Searing of Huron.
Arthur and Dale Tomes of Dell Rapids collected victories in the super stock heat races.
David McDonald of Huron continued his dominance in the WISSOTA late model division. He led all 20 laps of the feature race to win for the third week in a row at the Huron track. It was his 31st feature win at the speedway.
Arment finished second, with Ward claiming third. Rounding out the top five were Chad Chenoweth of Huron in fourth and Brian Diede of Huron in fifth.
McDonald and Ward won the late model heat races.
Racing will return to Dakota State Fair Speedway at 7 p.m. Saturday, with all five classes competing.
