Devyn Gortmaker and Michael Winsell were destined to be dart players. Both their fathers, Rod Gortmaker and Les Winsell, have been long time league players in the Wednesday night Miller Dart League sponsored by Manford Music.
In October of 2013 the boys took their love of the game from the “for fun” garage play to the bit more serious “league” play. Along with their Dads, Shane Sporrer and Ryan Harvey, they were the Hondah Highwaymen.
In February 2014, their dart journey took them to the 28th S.D. State Dart Tournament in Rapid City, where they placed 3rd in the “F” Division, quite a feat for first time tournament players.
In March 2014, the journey continued at the 18th Annual Heartland Invitational Tournament in Huron, where they took home the Championship in the “C” Division.
Their tournament team was just 4 players (the boys and their dads).
Devyn and Michael were now hooked on darts. They wanted more.
They played in a small Cricket league to qualify for the National Dart Associations First Annual Junior Dart Tournament.
So in June they headed to Bloomington, Minn. where they competed with boys and girls from seven states.
There were 66 competitors from South Dakota and the boys competed in Singles 501, Singles Cricket, Doubles 501, Doubles Cricket, and Mixed Triples Combo (with a little help from Rod).
In the singles events:
Cricket: Devyn placed 9th in Level 2 Michael placed 5th in Level 2
“501”: Devyn placed 1st in Level 4 Michael placed 2nd in Level 3
In the doubles events:
