New subdivision plans move ahead
Posted: Tuesday, Feb 9th, 2010

A developer’s plans for a new subdivision on the southwest side of Huron moved forward Monday when the City Commission approved the first plat and annexation of the property.

First reading of a rezoning petition also won approval.

Applicants for the Green Acres Addition — consisting of 40 acres north of Parkside Drive and east of Lincoln Avenue — are Charles Price, Mike Rogers Construction and Tim Amundson Construction.

A plat for the first four lots in the new housing development was approved.

Seven of the eventual 49 residential lots are being rezoned from large-lot residential to single-family residential. The seven form an L-shape on the west and south sides of the development and serve as a single-family buffer zone for existing homes in the area. They will be one and two acres in size.

The balance of the lots will be approximately one-half acre and are being rezoned into single-family, duplex and townhouse uses.

A developer’s plan for the project must be approved before the first building permit is issued.

Meanwhile, commissioners also approved a policy for Huron Community Campus signs to be located on city property. The proposal is to place the signs at various recreational facilities.

The signs are intended to serve as a marketing tool to make more people aware of the school’s course offerings.

Commissioners also:

• Reminded the public of the solid waste schedule for the Presidents’ Day holiday next week.

The rubble site will be closed on Monday and Monday’s garbage routes will be picked up on Tuesday. The Tuesday routes will be picked up on Wednesday. The Thursday and Friday routes will remain the same.

• Approved a change order for Excel Underground of Sioux Falls for water main replacement for an increase of $20,965. A final payment of $38,549 was also approved.

• Adopted a resolution for a bridge reinspection program with the state Department of Transportation. The state will pay for 80 percent of the cost and Pierce & Harris of Huron will do the work.

• Awarded a $75,281 bid to Ellingson Drainage of West Concord, Minn., for installation of a pipe with directional drilling for the first phase of the project to irrigate parks with raw James River water.

• Awarded bids for water, sewer and irrigation materials and other supplies to various companies. Northwest Pipe Fittings of Huron was the only local successful bidder. Others are from Fargo, Milbank and Sioux Falls.

• Set Feb. 22 as the hearing date for a request filed by Royal Entertainment LLC to hold an event in the city parking lot north of Third Street and Wisconsin Avenue Southwest on July 9-10.

• Announced the commission won’t meet next Monday due to the Presidents’ Day holiday.

• Approved a raffle request from the Huron Eyeopeners Lions.

• Approved a funding request for supervisory and other training for city employees.

• Went into executive session for personnel and contractural matters, and later had a work session on a computer software demonstration.
