Huron has been host to the “Heart of the Prairie” art exhibit during October at the Centennial Stone Church, but the last day to view the traveling exhibition will be Wednesday. The Stone Church is open weekdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday until 7 p.m.

The “Heart of the Prairie” is a collaboration of 24 poems by Bruce Roseland with photographs by Susan Melius, as they show the Missouri Coteau prairie from their perspective. Roseland’s poems and Melius’ photos come from their recently published book, “Church of the Holy Sunrise.” Roseland has had two other books of poetry published: “The Last Buffalo” and “A Prairie Prayer.” Autographed prints of the artwork on display are for sale at the Stone Church, with 40 percent of the price being donated toward the upkeep and preservation of the Stone Church. All three books are also available for purchase.

Roseland and Melius live in the Seneca area, about 20 miles apart, and both are captivated by the beauty of South Dakota. The “Heart of the Prairie” exhibit gives South Dakotans a chance to step back and see their surroundings anew through fresh eyes.

Museum director Rachel Farrell said there has been a steady stream of visitors coming through the Stone Church to view the exhibit. “But of course, we’d like to see a hundred visitors a day,” she quipped. “I do want to encourage everyone to come look at these photos and read these verses before the exhibit leaves Huron. This has been a real treat for Huron to have these pieces on display.”

Anyone who sees and ponders this exhibit will leave with a deeper appreciation for this part of the earth we call home.
