2019 Global 6K Walk for Water planned

HURON — The World Vision Global 6K Walk for Water is returning to Huron for its second year. After the community gathered in May 2018 to raise funds and awareness in support of those living in conditions that do not provide clean water, the results of the event exceeded the expectations to mark a successful introduction of the walk.
Registration will open at 8 a.m., with the walk/run to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4, near Putters and Scoops at Ravine Lake. Participants are welcome to walk, run or take a stroll along the lake with family or friends, while making a difference at the same time.
The event host, First Presbyterian Church of Huron, had a goal of 30 people taking part in the walk last year. After the day was over and numbers were being counted, more than 50 participants in the walk carved room for future development. This does not include those who were unable to attend and therefore made donations online.

“When we decided to do this walk last year we were looking for a way that we could help others. While also showing the strength and support offered by a small community,” organizer Deb VanOverschelde noted. “This year, we hope to see more involvement from the community, school groups and churches. It is such a great opportunity to pull together and show support to those struggling to have clean water, when this is something we take for granted.”
With the 2019 Global 6K Walk For Water ready to commence in a couple weeks, the goal this year for the organizers is to establish more of a growth in local interest. As members of the public begin to learn and share with others the need for clean drinking water in developing countries, the more people can get involved to offer sources for non-contaminated water to these areas.
The smallest acts can spark major impact in the world. According to the World Vision 6K organization, the average distance people have to walk in order to obtain water, that won’t cause potential illness or worse, is 6 kilometers.
“We get so busy with our everyday lives that we forget how important it is to spread love and kindness to everyone, there are so many people in our community that have come here to make a better life for themselves and their families and we see this as a way that we can help them help others that are still in these countries struck with poverty,” VanOverschelde explained.
Register online or offer a free will donation at the walk, all proceeds will go to World Vision 6K walk for water under the Huron team. Visit the World Vision/2019 Global 6K for Water website to learn more about the walk and how to help others in need.
“We would like to see everyone join us as an individual or a team to support this effort to bring clean water to others,” said VanOverschelde. “It is a great way to come together as a family, a community or a group to spread love and kindness. It will only take a couple hours on a beautiful Saturday morning to make a difference.”
