HURON — Eighth-seeded James Valley Christian escaped with a 52-50 victory against No. 9-seeded Lake Preston during the opening round of the Region 3B Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday at the JVC gym.
The Lady Vikings, who improved to 10-11, led 29-20 at the half, but faced a 40-39 deficit heading into the final quarter.
Brenna Held tallied 21 points and had 11 rebounds to lead JVC. Karilyn Wieting added 13 points and finished with team-highs of six assists and two steals, while Emily Hasart had eight points.
Ashlyn DeKnikker led the way for Lake Preston with 19 points. Ava Malone and Marissa Rober had eight points each.
Madison Perkins grabbed 12 rebounds for the Divers, who end the season at 4-17.
James Valley Christian will face top-seeded De Smet in De Smet at 7:30 p.m. today.
