HURON — Eighth-seeded James Valley Christian escaped with a 52-50 victory against No. 9-seeded Lake Preston during the opening round of the Region 3B Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday at the JVC gym.
The Lady Vikings, who improved to 10-11, led 29-20 at the half, but faced a 40-39 deficit heading into the final quarter.
Brenna Held tallied 21 points and had 11 rebounds to lead JVC. Karilyn Wieting added 13 points and finished with team-highs of six assists and two steals, while Emily Hasart had eight points.
Ashlyn DeKnikker led the way for Lake Preston with 19 points. Ava Malone and Marissa Rober had eight points each.
Madison Perkins grabbed 12 rebounds for the Divers, who end the season at 4-17.
James Valley Christian will face top-seeded De Smet in De Smet at 7:30 p.m. today.

WOLSEY — Seventh-seeded Wolsey-Wessington outscored No. 10 Wessington Springs 16-6 in the third quarter en route to a 53-34 victory in the opening round of the Region 3B Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday.

The Lady Warbirds led 17-8 at the end of the opening quarter and carried a 24-20 lead into the second half.
Chantel Haider and Mya Boomsma each had 13 points to lead Wolsey-Wessington, which improved to 10-11. Leah Williams and Lizzi Brandt added 10 and nine points, respectively.
Cortney Sprecher grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the Lady Warbirds.
Grace Gran paced Wessington Springs (3-18) with eight points, while Piper Jones added six points and had 11 rebounds.
Wolsey-Wessington will travel to face second-seeded Castlewood in Castlewood at 7:30 p.m. Today.

ARLINGTON — Sixth-seeded Arlington pulled away in the second and third quarters for a 49-31 victory against No. 11-seeded Iroquois/Doland in the opening round of the Region 3B Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Monday.
The Cardinals, who improved to 12-9, led 33-18 at the half and 42-21 heading into the final quarter.
Hadley Carlson had 15 points to lead three players in double figures for Arlington. Kasey Pistulka and Makayla Nelson added 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Cecili Carlson had seven points.
Nelson grabbed eight rebounds for the Cardinals, while Cecili Carlson had three assists and two steals and Harley Johnson had a pair of steals.
Katie Dubro led Iroquois/Doland (2-19) with 12 points and seven rebounds. Kaitlyn Maas had six points and two steals, while Jorja Huls had four points and Anna Decker had a pair of steals.
Arlington will play third-seeded Deubrook Area at 6 p.m. Today in Castlewood.
