Barnes letter 6-5-21

To the Editor:

I recently saw an opinion piece on controlled burning. This has been a management tool from for ages.

Native tribes burned the prairie to provide fresh grass for buffalo. It stimulates regrowth and maintains native plant diversity.

While there is some mortality, most species escape the slow burn and ground nesting birds will renest with early spring fires.

It might not look pretty, but it sure beats early summer mowing.
