HURON – The Original South Dakota BBQ Championships in Huron is one of 33 recipients of funding under the third annual Smokin’ With Smithfield Grant program.
As one of more than 200 applications to be submitted, the Huron competition was among the nonprofit and community barbecue events across the country to be awarded $3,000 each on behalf of the brand.
Established in 2017, the Smokin’ With Smithfield Grant program is designed to provide event support for sanctioned barbecue competitions and deepen the prize pool in overall and major meat categories for participating cook teams.
Huron’s event is May 31 to June 1 on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds.

“We are extremely excited to have received the $3,000 Smokin’ With Smithfield grant,” said Candi Briley, assistant manager of the State Fair.
“The money will go toward deepening the prize payout to the top 10 overall teams and the top 10 in each of the four meat categories,” she said.
“Our goal is to attract more teams to the contest. Being one of 33 recipients out of more than 200 applicants shows we have a world class BBQ event in Huron,” Briley said.
“Since the inception of the program, we’re proud to have awarded 119 grants, bringing our total investment to nearly $400,000,” said Emily Detwiler, director of fresh pork marketing for Smithfield Foods.
“From our sponsorships of major competitions, to lasting relationships with award-winning pitmasters, and commitment to delivering consistent, top quality products, this program is just one of the many ways Smithfield continues to invest in the sport of competition barbecue,” she said.
