Bulldogs, Warbirds win openers in Class 9A playoffs

DE SMET — De Smet, which was the fourth seed for the Class 9A playoffs, needed just one half of football to get past No. 13-seeded Britton-Hecla on Thursday in the opening round.

Rett Osthus rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to the victory. He also had 177 return yards and punt return for a touchdown.

Tory Holland had 26 yards rushing a pair of touchdowns for De Smet, while Kalen Garry had two catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Colt Wilkinson was 5 of 9 passing for 61 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs. He added 75 yards on the ground and had a rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Holland finished with seven tackles, while Garry had six stops. Owen Kerkvliet and Wilkinson each had five tackles.

De Smet, which improved to 9-0, will host fifth-seeded Warner in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28.

Wolsey-Wessington 50, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 0
WOLSEY — Seventh-seeded Wolsey-Wessington opened the Class 9A playoffs with a 50- win against Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Thursday.

Marrian Gohn rushed for 159 yards and five touchdowns for the Warbirds, who improved to 6-3. Joey Hoverson added 68 yards rushing.

Wolsey-Wessington quarterback Blaze Herdman threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdown passes went to Jemetrius Scott, who finished with 97 yards receiving.

Carson Zomer had 38 yards receiving for the Warbirds.

Defensively, Wolsey-Wessington was led by Tate French with eight tackles. Keegan Haider and Moshe Richmond each had six tackles.

Will Matson had 16 yards passing for Oldham-Ramona/Rutland. Will Olson finished with 18 yards receiving, while Jacob Jaton and Orion Albertston were limited to five and four yards, rushing, respectively.

Albertson, Isaac Trygstad and Caleb Jaton all had three tackles for the Raiders, who end the season at 4-5.

Wolsey-Wessington will travel to play second-seeded Howard, which defeated Kimball/White Lake 40-6 in its opener, on Oct. 28.

Winner 60, Clark/Willow Lake 0
WINNER – The top-ranked and undefeated Winner Warriors rolled over the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones in the opening round of the Class 11B playoffs. Winner moves to 9-0 with the victory and will play McCook/Central/Montrose Thursday. The Cyclones finish the season at 4-5.

McCook Central/Montrose 9, Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 6
WESSINGTON SPRINGS – The Fighting Cougars of McCook Central/Montrose were able to come into Wessington Springs and defeat the W/WS/SC Blackhawks Thursday in opening round playoff action in Class 11B. The Fighting Cougars (7-2) will travel to Winner next week. The Blackhawks finish the year 5-4.


Hitchcock-Tulare 38, Faith 0
TULARE – The Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots rolled to a 38-0 victory over the Faith Longhorns Thursday in the opening round of the Class 9B playoffs in Tulare.

The Patriots leaned on the legs of Erik Salmen to move to 7-3. Salmen opened the scoring with a 64-yard scamper and totaled 111 yards rushing on 15 carries with a pair of touchdowns.

Landon Puffer ran for 65 yards and a touchdown while throwing for 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran for a 2-point conversion.

Kyle Hamilton led the Patriots defense with 10 tackles. He also ran in three 2-point conversions.
Hitchcock-Tulare will travel to Potter County next week.

Aberdeen Roncalli 14, Redfield 6
ABERDEEN – A final drive fell short as the Redfield Pheasants fell to the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers in 11B playoff action Thursday. Redfield finishes the season 5-4.
