HURON — In a brief meeting Monday evening at City Hall, the only item on the Huron city commission agenda that received any “nay” votes was the first reading of the city’s cannabis business licenses and regulations ordinance.

Ordinance No. 2227-5-132 was introduced by city attorney Tucker Volesky for first reading. The fees for licenses are not included in the ordinance. City finance director Paullyn Carey explained that fees for licensing will be part of a resolution in order to have them reviewed on a yearly basis. The vote was 3-1 among commissioners in favor of the first reading.

The second reading of the ordinance will be Oct. 25.

Assistant city engineer Dennis Bennett presented a payment request from Menning Excavating, Inc. regarding the Vantage Business Park sanitary sewer construction for the amount of $549,941.75. Bennett explained that the sewer is now fully installed, but there are final parts of the job that need to be completed by Menning to complete the project.

Police Chief Kevin Van Diepen presented the recommendation from the appraisal committee on the dispatch consoles. The finding of the committee was that the market for the consoles was nil, so the consoles will be considered surplus as scrap.

Commissioners also:
• Terminated Dayton Huber from the seasonal Broadland Creek Pro Shop position.
• Approved the promotion of Andrea Hofer to the Patrol Sergeant position.

• Approved eligibility for supplemental benefits for Isaiah Cutler, Park Maintenance 2, and Cole Long, Police Officer, upon completion of 1040 probationary hours.

Mayor Gary Harrington also announced that the State of the City luncheon would be held Thursday, Oct. 21, at noon at the Huron Event Center.
