City notes 100th year of Huron Amateur Radio Club

HURON — The first notable item on the agenda in Monday evening’s Huron City Commission meeting was a proclamation from Huron Mayor Gary Harrington declaring June 2022 as Amateur Radio Month in the city.

As part of the presentation, Harrington noted that the Huron Amateur Radio Club is celebrating its 100th year this year. He was presented with a pen after the proclamation presentation by members of the club.

Commissioners then acted as the city board of adjustment to hear a variance request filed by Michael Rosemore regarding his business at 467 Dakota Ave S. He was requesting to operate a sales and repair business at that location, however city code does not allow this use in an area zoned B-2.

City Planner Barry Cranston explained that previous businesses that had operated in the location were grandfathered in when sales restrictions were put on the B-2 designation. The hearing examiner had recommended approval with restrictions to allow for corner visibility. With no comments from the public, the variance was approved.

Commissioners also received a presentation on the new city website from Chad Borgan, the city’s IT administrator. Borgan explained that the new site would be huronsd.gov and focus specifically on the actions of the city government, allowing for the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau to utilize the huronsd.com site. Borgan demonstrated the layout of the new site and answered questions from the commission regarding separation from the Chamber while also ensuring someone looking for information from the city would not be frustrated trying to find that information.

Police Chief Kevin VanDiepen presented to the commissioners an opportunity to utilize U.S. Marshal Service funds to do sex offender compliance checks in Huron and outlying Beadle County. This was approved.

Commissioners also:

• Set June 6 as the public hearing date to consider transferring a 2021-2022 retail on sale liquor license and a package off sale liquor license from Wayne Goethel, Hurst’s Corner, 201 Dakota Ave S, to Goethel Inc, DBA Hurst’s Corner, 201 Dakota Ave S.
• Approved a parade permit filed by Huron Area Antique Power for June 17.
• Approved the hire of Ethan Hofer as lifeguard.
• Approved the increase in grade and step for Garret Welch following completion of Water/Wastewater Class II certification.
• Terminated Drew McLean from the volunteer firefighter position.
• Approved the promotion of Jay Winter to Fire Lieutenant.
• Approved the transfer of Kristina Johnson from lifeguard to concessions.
• Approved the transfer of Madison Perry from concessions to lifeguard.
• Approved a wage correction for Jamee Kattner.

City offices will be closed and there will be no commission meeting next Monday, May 30, due to Memorial Day.

Commissioner Rich Bragg read the following statement from the Solid Waste Department:

The solid waste department rubble site will be closed on Saturday, May 28, and Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day weekend.

Monday’s garbage, recycling, and grass collection will be done on Wednesday, June 1. Please remember to have containers out the night before. Drivers are starting all routes at 6 a.m. and trucks will not be rerouted.
