HURON — Dave J. Hofer, 92, of Huron, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls surrounded by his loving family.


His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Mt. Olivet Church with burial at Ideal Cemetery-Mt. Olivet Section.

Dave J. Hofer was born March 12, 1928, on a farm 11 miles east of Hitchcock to Jacob S. and Mary (Wipf) Hofer. He was the 5th child of 8 children. He attended Foster Creek Country School near Lake Byron and Hitchcock High School for a year before returning home to help on the farm.


Dave was a member of Prairie Bible Church and was baptized in 1946.
Dave married Gladys Gross near Carpenter on February 27, 1951. They lived on a farm north east of Huron for a year. Dave was drafted into the US Army in April 1952. Dave was in Virginia for basic training and then on to San Antonio, Texas. In January 1953, he was stationed in Albuquerque, N.M., until April 1954, when he was honorably discharged. Dave and Gladys farmed in the Hitchcock area until in 1982. They then moved to Huron where Dave worked at UBC until 2001.


Dave and Gladys were members of Mt. Olivet Church. In his spare time, Dave enjoyed woodworking, playing moon, search-a-word, and putting puzzles together. Dave always enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.


Dave is survived by his children, Carol (Doug) Fox of Bancroft, Jerolynn (Dan) Larson of Aberdeen, and Keith (Teresa) Hofer of Yankton; 11 grandchildren, Chad, David, Michael Larson of Aberdeen, Jason Fox of Bancroft, Julie (Dan) Meylor of Mitchell, Jon (Molly) Fox of Bancroft, Jeremy Fox of Bancroft, Kari (Jamin) Johnson of Jamestown, N.D., Kasey (Katie) Hofer of Yankton, Miranda (Tom) Nygaard of Watertown, and Chelsey (David Thompson) Ewalt of Milbank; great-grandchildren, Stirling and Sullivan Fox, Hudson and Maximus Meylor, Ava, Rylee, and Brynlee Fox, Giovanni and Leland Larson, Landon, Lauren and Logan Johnson, Kaleb, Taylor, and Knox Hofer, Elsie Nygaard, and Witten Thompson; brothers, Johnnie (Elvina) Hofer of Huron, and Sam Hofer of Hitchcock; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vernel Gross of Platte, Clifford Gross of Rapid City, Duane (Naomi) Gross of Tulare, LeRoy (Barbara) Gross of Huron, Allen (Karen) Gross of Menno, Mary Ann Gross of Minn., Marlyce Spain of N.C., Glenda Hofer of Redfield, Vic (Twila) Gross of Hitchcock, and Larry Malikowski of Fla.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys on December 6, 2018; his brothers, Eli (Ruth), Jake (Rosie), Martin (VeAnna), and Richard Hofer; his sister, Mary (Jake) Tschetter; great-grandson, Deegan Meylor; sisters-in-law, Ruth Gross, Marcella Malikowski, Ruth Hofer, and Rosaline Gross.
