HURON — Dennis Rasmussen, 77, of Huron, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Avantara Healthcare-Huron.

Beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend, Dennis Rasmussen, gave his last hug on January 16, 2022.

A memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m., Thursday at Kuhler Funeral, with his family present from 5 to 6 p.m., Thursday evening.
The following day, Dennis will take his final Jeep ride through Homer, Neb., to his resting place at Green Valley Cemetery. His graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m., at the Green Valley Cemetery, followed by a visitation at the Legion Hall in Homer.

Dennis Burke Rasmussen was born on February 22, 1944. He grew up in Homer, Neb., and graduated from Homer High School in 1962. After high school, Dennis enlisted in the Navy and served in the Vietnam War; he spent two years serving his country.

On October 22, 1965, Dennis married the love of his life, Diane Elaine McClintock, in Ainsworth, Neb. The couple celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past October.

Dennis devoted his life to his family and his career as an educator and administrator. Dennis received his undergraduate degree in education from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He later attended Emporia College in Emporia, Kan., where he earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration and after, received a School Superintendent endorsement.

Dennis devoted many years to the education field, spending his time as a teacher, principal, and coach. He ended his career in education with a tenure of 16 years as a principal in the Huron School District. He has left an impact on students, fellow educators, and administrators in various districts across the United States. Dennis has many fond (and sometimes hilarious) stories from his time in education and enjoyed reminiscing on these memories with his friends and family.

Dennis’s retirement from education didn’t stop his involvement in the community. At any time, you could find Dennis in the stands at the Huron Arena loudly cheering on his granddaughters at basketball or volleyball games (His favorite saying was, “I haven’t missed a call from the stands all season.”) or at the High School auditorium watching his granddaughters perform in a play, band, or choir concert. It is fair to say that Grandpa Rasmussen was his granddaughters’ biggest fan.

In addition to being a support to his family, Dennis enjoyed many hobbies that he shared with friends and family. Dennis loved traveling to the Black Hills with his wife, where he spent his time on the rocky trails jeeping in his rust-orange Jeep CJ7. He enjoyed fishing and camping in the warmer months and, in the winter, traveling down to Arizona. If he wasn’t traveling, you could hear Dennis telling stories with his coffee group at the local breakfast stops or shuffling a deck of cards for a quick game of cribbage. Dennis cherished time spent with friends and family. There will be countless memories to hold close.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Gladys (Frederick) Rasmussen; and his brother-in-law Bob Wolf.

The people grateful for having shared many memories in his life are his wife, Diane; his daughter, Dr. Jennifer (Chad) Schroder; three granddaughters, Cameron (Jake) Axtmann, Karissa (Chase VonEye) Schroder, and Madyson Schroder; and one sister, Mary Wolf. As well as his niece, Ellen (Punky) Moteberg; and his nephew, Rick (Liz) Wolf; not to mention the friends and coworkers with whom he shared many moments.
