HURON — The Flandreau Indian Lady Indians towered over the Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks for a 53-33 victory to open play for the girls’ 26th annual Dakota Oyate Challenge, Thursday at Huron Arena.
Jerusha Bain led the Lady Indians, now 5-4 on the season, with a game-high of 17 points, while 12 were tallied by Sinona Flute and another 11 were added by Joanna Fallis. Flandreau Indian will play Crazy Horse at 4:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.
The Thunderhawks were led by Kobe Iron Wing with 19 points and 11 more from Kaylynn Travesie, to total 30 of the team total 33 points during the game. Tiospaye Topa will face Marty in the consolation round at noon today.
Crazy Horse 44, Marty 37
The Crazy Horse Lady Chiefs overcame a 20-10 halftime deficit, to post a 44-37 first round victory over the Marty Lady Braves in the Dakota Oyate Challenge Thursday afternoon at Huron Arena.
Deidra Roberts scored 14 points - 12 in the second half - to power Crazy Horse to the win. The Lady Chiefs improve to 5-7 with the win and will play the Flandreau Indian School at 4:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.
Audree Iron Elk was the lone member of the Lady Braves to dent double figures, with 10 points. Marty will play Tiospaye Topa in the consolation round today at noon.
Tiospa Zina 58, Omaha Nation 50
The Tiospa Zina Wambdi outscored the Omaha Nation Lady Chiefs 22 to seven from the free throw line Thursday evening, en route to a 58-50 win in the opening round of the Dakota Oyate Challenge girls’ basketball tournament at Huron Arena.
Lexus Red Thunder recorded 22 points and Jordyn LaBlaine added 18 to lead Tiospa Zina.
Deondra Blackbird scored 21 points to pace the Omaha Nation effort.
The Lady Chiefs fall to 1-13 with the loss.
Tiospa Zina moves into the semifinals against the winner of Thursday’s game between Lower Brule and Takini at 3 p.m. today, while Omaha Nation will face the loser of that game in the consolation semifinals beginning this morning at 9 a.m.
