Lower Brule 78, Marty 58
HURON — The Lower Brule Sioux came out of the starting blocks on fire and never let up, racing to a 78-58 win over the Marty Braves Friday night in a championship semifinal of the boys’ division of the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

The Braves had no answer for Brian LaRoche, Jr., as he went off for 38 points on the night, while Gavin Thigh added 16 points for Lower Brule, which improves to 11-3 and moves to tonight’s championship game of the DOC.

Julius Brugier scored 19 and Kizen Ashes added 15 for Marty, which slips to 4-5 with the loss. The Braves will play for third place this evening.

HURON — The Crazy Horse Chiefs rolled into the championship game of the boys’ Dakota Oyate Challenge, with a 71-55 win over the Omaha Nation Chiefs in a semifinal game at Huron Arena.

Noah Iron Horse scored 25 points and LeBron White Eagle added 11 to propel the Chiefs into tonight’s title game against Lower Brule.

Omaha Nation got 27 points from Keiyan Parker and 11 from Keithin Miller in the contest. They will play Marty tonight for third place in the DOC.

Consolation semifinals
Tiospaye Topa 80, Takini 39
HURON — The Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks controlled the game from the opening tip, racing to an 80-39 victory over the Takini Skyhawks in the consolation round of the boys’ Dakota Oyate Challenge Friday morning at Huron Arena.

Kristopher Meeter led the Thunderhawks, who improve to 8-2, with 21 points. Dennis Sand II came off the bench to notch 17 points and Jorge Hawk chipped in 13.

Takini was led by CJ Pederson’s 13 points. The Skyhawks will play this morning for seventh place in the tournament, while Tiospaye Topa will pay for the fifth place consolation championship.

HURON – The Wakpala Sioux picked up a 74-45 victory over the Flandreau Indian School Indians Friday afternoon in second round action of the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

Wakiya Plenty Chief led Wakpala, now 5-8, with 20 points. Ashtyn Kills Small chipped in 17 points and Zachary Moran added 16 points for the Sioux.

The Indians fell to 2-6 despite 26 points from Malik Longie. Lavelle Fights Over added 13 points for Flandreau Indian School.

Omaha Nation 65, Marty 50
HURON — The Omaha Nation Lady Chiefs used a balanced scoring attack, pushing their season record to 7-1, and punching their ticket to tonight’s title game, with a 65-50 win over the Marty Lady Braves in a championship round semifinal at the Dakota Oyate Challenge Friday afternoon.

Mikkel Parker came off the Omaha Nation bench to lead the scoring effort with 15 points. Tylisha McCauley added 11 as eight Lady Chiefs’ players scored five points or more in the contest.

Hawk Bair led the Lady Braves iwth 15 points, while Jayla Brugier added 13 and Rozarion Zephier scored 10.

Lower Brule 62, Wakpala 25
HURON – The Lower Brule Lady Sioux exploded for 41 points in the second half to run away with a 62-25 victory over the Wakpala Lady Sioux Friday in semifinal action of the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

Brilyn LaRoche and Lael Middletent each dropped in 15 points for Lower Brule to move to 7-5. Courtney Traversie added 11 points.

Wakpala falls to 7-8. Tylene Hawk Bear scored 13 points.

Wakpala will play Marty for third place tonight, while Lower Brule will tip off against Omaha Nation for the DOC championship.

Flandreau Indian School 50, Takini 33
HURON — The Flandreau Indian School Lady Indians won their first game of the season Friday morning, dispatching the Takini Lady Skyhawks 50-33 and earning a spot in today’s consolation championship game in the girls’ Dakota Oyate Challenge basketball tournament at Huron Arena.

FIS controlled the game from the outset as they improved to 1-6 with the win. Niyah Sierra was the lone Lady Indian to dent double figures, with 18 points.

Takini, now 1-10, was led by Jai’Enna Big Eagle’s 11 points, while Halo Waloke scored 10. The Lady Skyhawks hit only 10 of 26 free throws in the game.

FIS will face Tisospaye Topa in the consolation championship fifth place game, while Takini will take on Crazy Horse in the seventh-place contest.

Tiospaye Topa 49, Crazy Horse 14
HURON – The Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks jumped out to a 32-6 first-half lead en route to a 49-14 victory over the Crazy Horse Lady Chiefs Friday during consolation action at the Dakota Oyate Challenge at Huron Arena.

The Thunderhawks moved to 8-5 behind 17 points from K’Launa Buffalo. Leilani Bowker added 12 points.

The Lady Chiefs fell to 2-10. Alyssa Brewer led Crazy Horse with six points.

Tiospaye Topa will face the Flandreau Indian School in the fifth-place game this morning, while Crazy Horse will take on Takini in the seventh-place game.
