HURON — Gunner Baatrup, 91, of Huron, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 8, 2022.


His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church.


Burial including military honors will be held in the Broadland Cemetery in Broadland.


Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening.


Gunner was born Feb. 3, 1931, in Mitchell, to Chris Baatrup and Laura (Heymeyer) Baatrup. He graduated from Egan High School and received a BA in Economics from Huron College.


Gunner married Gloria LeGrand of Virgil on Aug. 12, 1956.


Gunner served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before his retirement. Gunner was a dedicated member of the American Legion Schmidt Barnes Post #268 in Virgil.

He served as 2006-2007 State Commander of the South Dakota American Legion.


Gunner was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Huron. Gunner felt that “A man should be judged by his deeds.” Gunner served on mission trips to Haiti, Russia, Louisiana and Texas. He enjoyed helping people.


Gunner is survived by his wife, Gloria; and their four children, Douglas (Linda) Baatrup, Mrs. Hal (Judy) Wrentmore, Mrs. Craig (Lorna) Webb and Mrs. Gregory (Karen) Szachara; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
