Hunger Games are set to begin

Posted

HURON — The seventh annual Hunger Games citywide food drive to collect items most often used by the Heartland Backpack Program is set to begin.
First organized by Raven Aerostar as a friendly competition between businesses in the Industrial Park, the Hunger Games food drive now encomapasses all  businesses in the area. The competition is now organized each year by Northwest Pipe Fittings.

If your business would like to participate, please contact Mary Pearson at Northwest Pipe Fittings (352-8531) or mary@huronnwp.com by Sept. 8 with the total number of employees taking part.
The winner is chosen by determining a percentage from the number of employees participating and the amount of food donated. The business with the highest percentage of donations wins the traveling trophy for one year.
The Heartland Region Backpack program serves children in Huron, Iroquois and Wolsey-Wessington, as well as the children attending HeadStart. Over 500 children were served supplemental food items for the weekend each week last year. The cost is approximately $4 per child per week and the food drive helps keep the cost manageable.
Items most needed for the Backpack Program include cans of soup, microwave popcorn, mac and cheese, microwave meals and pudding cups.
