Huron 13U finishes season on high note

BROOKINGS - While reaching Sunday’s championship round was already out of reach coming into Saturday’s game against Yankton, the Huron 13U team made sure to make their final game of the season a good one, defeating Yankton 14-8 at Erv Huether Field in Brookings as part of the South Dakota 13U state tournament.

Huron opened the game with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the first inning, but Yankton answered with four runs in the top of the third inning to make the score 5-4.

The Tigers offense then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third to push the lead out to 12-4. Yankton scored three runs in the top of the fifth, but Huron immediately responded with another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. A Yankton run in the top of the sixth gave the final score.

Jeremy Hofer opened the contest on the mound for Huron, tossing three innings, allowing four runs on a hit and seven walks, striking out three. Landon Schutt tossed two innings of relief and Blaise Simmon closed out the final inning.

Three Huron hitters rapped out multiple hits on the day, with Gavin Waldner powering out a home run and a single, Tyce Huber hitting a single and a double, and Schutt slapping a pair of singles.

The Tiger attack featured 14 stolen bases in the game. Chase Schuchhardt stole four bags to lead the charge. Davis Chase, Waldner, and Schutt each stole two bases. Huber, Hunter Fenske, Kaleb Rashaad, and Diego Colon each had a steal.

The 13U club finishes the season with an 18-20 record.
