Huron 13U struggles at Sioux Fals tourney

SIOUX FALLS – Huron’s 13U squad had a tough weekend at the Sioux Falls Invitational Tournament over the weekend, dropping four games.

The first game was Friday against the Eden Prairie Eagles AAA 13U team. Eden Prairie scored 10 runs between the third and fourth inning and came away with a run-rule victory.

Davis Chase made the start on the mound for Huron, and he breezed through the first two innings, but finished with three innings pitched, eight runs allowed, and three strikeouts. Chase Schuchhardt relieved Chase, pitching an inning and allowing four runs.

Huron’s offense managed just three hits, and Chase was the only Huron hitter who was on base twice, slapping a single and drawing a walk.

The second game of the tournament on Friday was against Sioux Falls Post 15 13U. Huron took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, when Post 15 scored five runs in the inning and held on for the 7-6 victory.

Parker Bischoff opened the game on the mound, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs and striking out three. Blaise Simmon tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one, and Cooper Bischoff finished out the game with 1 1/3 innings of relief, striking out three.

The Huron offense nailed nine hits and stole six bases against Post 15 in the loss.

Gavin Waldner had a triple and a single, Cooper Bischoff had a double and a single, and Chase had a pair of singles.

On the bases, Chase stole a pair of bases, while Waldner, Cooper Bischoff, Landon Schutt, and Teagen Lien each nabbed a steal.

The third game for Huron was against Sioux City Steel on Saturday. Sioux City jumped out to a 14-0 run before Huron could push a run across, though not enough to avoid a run-rule win for Sioux City.

Cooper Bischoff made the start for Huron, tossing 2 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs and striking out two.

Jeremy Hofer allowed three runs in 1/3 inning, and Schutt finished out the game with one inning, allowing three runs.

The Huron offense only managed one hit.

Finally, Huron faced off against Mitchell Sunday. Mitchell used a 5-run second inning and 4-run fourth inning to separate in a 12-4 win.

Chase opened the game on the mound, but he only lasted 2/3 inning, allowing 2 runs. Schuchhardt went 1/3 inning, allowing three runs and Simmon allowed two runs without recording an out. Waldner pitched two innings of relief, allowing four runs. Schutt finished out the game, allowing 1 2/3 innings and allowing one run.

Huron’s hitters managed seven hits and five stolen bases despite the loss. Waldner was the only Huron hitter with multiple hits, tapping out two singles.

Cooper Bischoff swiped three bags while Tyce Huber and Hunter Fenske each had one.

Huron 13U (10-12) travels to Brookings today for a doubleheader that begins at noon.
