BROOKINGS — If Thursday’s Brookings Invitational is any indication, the Class “AA” State girls golf tournament next month should be a barn burner.
Thursday’s match at the Brookings Country Club featured 14 of the 18 AA teams in the state and found the top three teams within one stroke of each other when the smoke cleared. The state tournament will be held back at Brookings Country Club June 6-7.
Aberdeen Central snuck in for the team title, as the Golden Eagles shot a team total 322 Thursday, outdistancing the match 333s shot by O’Gorman and Mitchell.
The Huron Tigers shot a 359, putting them 10th in the field.
O’Gorman’s Lauren Suttcliffe, who finished third in AA last season took medalist honors on Thursday, as she fired an even par 72. Second place was a logjam of 77s, as Olivia Braun of Aberdeen Central, defending state champion Reese Jansa of Harrisburg and Allison Meyerick of Mitchell all finished at the five-over-par score. Tanna Phares of Rapid City Stevens rounded out the top-five with a 78 on the day.
Huron was led by Bryn Huber, who shot an 80, good for 10th at the invite. Kenya Bigelow shot 88 (28th place). Olivia Rink signed for a 91 (placing her 35th), while Libby Picek finished 67th with a 102.
Huron will compete in the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Tuesday in Pierre, then will get ready for the state tournament.
