HURON — A 32-year-old Huron man is in custody in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond and charged with multiple felonies, including aggravated assault/domestic abuse following a four-hour standoff Friday evening in southwest Huron.
Police said they surrounded and secured the area of Seventh Street and Montana Avenue Southwest after Dennis Pagan fled his home carrying his infant child and closed himself inside a neighbor’s shed.
Pagan threatened to harm the infant and himself. Law enforcement officers confirmed the threat was valid.

Certified hostage negotiators with the police department were on scene and began negotiations with Pagan.
About four hours after negotiations started, Pagan agreed to hand the infant over to officers. The infant was immediately removed from harm’s way and transported by ambulance to the Huron Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.
After handing over his infant child, Pagan again threatened to harm himself. The threat was confirmed and a Taser was deployed and Pagan was subsequently arrested.
Initially, officers were looking for Pagan due to an assault that had just been reported.
Law enforcement officers from the police department, its special response team, as well as the Beadle County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol were on the scene.
