Huron woman earns Red Cross award

SIOUX FALLS — Following an unprecedented year of disaster response and major milestones in home fire preparedness, the American Red Cross in Eastern South Dakota held its annual meeting on June 19.
Volunteers were recognized for extraordinary work in their communities through the Red Cross, including Charlotte Henley of Huron, who received the Living the Mission award.
Henley has been a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 14 years. She is a leader in her community of Huron and her engagement spans across multiple lines of service within the Red Cross. She is a first aid and CPR instructor, a disaster responder, and also serves as a caseworker to assist families in their recovery process following a disaster such as a home fire or severe storm.

In addition, Henley serves as the Red Cross tribal relations liaison. She rallies community and volunteer support for blood drives and has been the driving force in installing more than 1,000 free smoke alarms in Beadle County over the last four years through the American Red Cross’ Home Fire Campaign.
The Living the Mission Award is presented to an individual who has repeatedly demonstrated the qualities of and exemplified the American Red Cross mission statement. The recipient goes above and beyond expectations to move the vision of the organization forward in various areas of service and humanitarian efforts. Should the mission of the Red Cross be stood up on legs of its own, this individual would be that living mission statement.
