James Valley Christian boys win Region 1B title

Beck second for De Smet in Region 2B

WEBSTER — The James Valley Christian Vikings boys’ cross country team won the Region 1B title and its girls’ team snuck into the State “B” cross country meet next week, with their performances at the meet on Thursday.
The Viking boys’ team defended its Region title, taking places 5-8 and scoring 18 points to sweep to the title. Warner was runner up with 24 points and Northwestern claimed the final qualifying place with its third place finish. Deubrook Area also qualified for the state meet, by having its three scorers all finish in the top 20 individually.
Warner’s Cody Larson won the boy’s event in a time of 18:19, breaking the tape nearly a full minute ahead of Jarret Haven of Northwestern. Michael Wirth of Warner finished third, but the next Monarch finisher was in 20th place, opening the door for the Vikings.
Daniel Ayoroa led JVC finishers, followed by Braden Held, Darrian Hood and Colton Schweigert, who finished ninth.
Other Heartland-area qualifiers included a pair of Clark-Willow Lake runners; Schuyler McElhone in 12th and Charlie Speiker in 19th.
The girls’ title was won by Deubrook Area, as the Dolphins saw senior Josie Olsen take medalist honors in 22:48. Dakota Hills finished second in the team standings, Northwestern was third and James Valley Christian took fourth, but had its top three runners in the top 20, to claw its way into the state meet.
Jessica Boekelheide of Northwestern was second in the race and Dakota Hills runner Victoria Zirbel was third.
Abby Hasart of James Valley Christian keyed the Vikings’ run with a fourth place finish. Madelyn Brantner was 7th and AbbyKate Hamilton took 20th in the race.
In the JV race, the Deubrook Area girls posted a perfect score of six points to claim the team title. The Deubook boys also won their team title with 11 points. Joeve Krier won the girls’ race and Shiloh Koch won the boys’ race for the Dolphins.

Region 2B
IRENE — Baylor Beck of De Smet finished second in the boys’ varsity race at the Region 2B Cross Country Meet on Thursday at the Irene Rodeo Grounds.
Beck clocked a time of 18:10.56 to secure his spot in the field for the Class B State Meet.
Jacob Vogel of Dell Rapids St. Mary won the boys’ varsity race in 17:21.18, while Christopher Mohr of Chester Area was third at 18:14.27.
Also earning a berth in the state meet for the Bulldogs was Logan Millman, who finished 16th at 19:15.
The top 20 finishers and the top three teams qualified for the state meet.
Trevin Holland finished just outside the top-20 for De Smet with a time of 19:57.58.

The De Smet boys just missed qualifying as a team by finishing fourth with 36 points.
Dell Rapids St. Mary won the boys’ title with 17 points, while Canistota was second at 29 and Elkton-Lake Benton was third at 31.
The only state qualifier for the De Smet girls was Emily Martens, who was 19th at 22:27.98.
Alcester-Hudson won the girls’ region title with 17 points, while Howard was second at 27 and Canistota was third at 32.  De Smet was seventh at 62.
Haden Palmlund of De Smet was second in the junior varsity boys’ race with a time of 13:24.33.
The Class B State Meet is scheduled for Oct. 20 in Sioux Falls.

Region 4B
GETTYSBURG — The Ipswich Lady Tigers won the girls’ title and the Lyman Raiders edged Sunshine Bible for the boys’ crown at the Region 4B Cross Country meet, which was held a day later than originally scheduled due to cold and snowy weather.
The Lady Tigers claimed three of the top four places to win the girls’ title with a nearly-perfect 7 points. Timber Lake had three runners in the top 10 to finish with 16 points in second. Potter County claimed the final automatic team qualifying spot from the meet, taking third with 30 points. The two other teams that fielded full teams, Sully Buttes and Wakpala, also qualified by having three runners finish in the top 20.
Aleah Steger of Ipswich won the girls’ race in a time of 19:43.57 over the 5K course. Teammates Tessa Kilber and Emily DeRaad were second and fourth, respectively. Timber Lake was led by third-place finisher Bobbi Smith, while Shay Kraft finished fifth.
Local runners competing and qualifying for the state meet by finishing in the top 20 at the meet.
Hannah Terkildsen of Sanborn Central-Woonsocket took 8th in the race and Highmore-Harrold’s Maddie Knox finished 15th. Shiara Noyes of Wolsey-Wessington finished 26th, narrowly missing qualifying for the state meet.
In the boys’ race, Lyman’s top three scorers finished third, seventh and 19th in the race for 29 points, while Sunshine Bible Academy had runners finish sixth, eighth and 16th, for 30 points. Both teams - as well as Timber Lake - qualified as teams for the State “B” cross country meet.
Sam Rhaecine of Wakpala was individual medalist, breaking the tape in a time of 17:12.03. Timber Lake’s Beau DuBray of Timber Lake was second and Lyman runner Brad Lebeda was third. Faulkton Area runners Andrew Sorensen and Hunter Niederbaumer were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Sunshine Bible will take its full team to the state meet. On Thursday, they were led by Jace Burma in 6th, Travis Hass in 8th and Jade Burma in 17th place. Runners for teams that do not field complete teams are not scored in the team standings, regardless of where they finish. Other Crusader runners included Everett Paul in 22nd and Gage Davis in 57th.
Other Heartland-area runners who qualified for the state meet included AJ Neely of Wessington Springs (12th) and Tate Haider of Wolsey-Wessington (15th).
No team points were kept in the Junior Varsity races. the girls’ race was won by Abby Olson of Ipswich and teammate Turner Thorson won the boys’ division.
