HURON — Larry McBride, age 70, of Huron, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the Select Specialty Hospital at Sioux Falls, surrounded by his family.
His memorial visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Kuhler Funeral Home, with his family present from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. A private burial will be held in the Riverside Cemetery.
Larry was born to Ellen and Arthur McBride in Huron on Feb. 14, 1949. After serving in the United States Army and a tour of duty in Korea, he returned home to South Dakota and married Joan (Phan) Wickherst and raised four sons.
Larry had a great love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, four wheeling and gardening. He was never happier than when he was sharing one of these pastimes with family. He had a great love of motorcycles and looked forward to going to Sturgis every summer. Larry, the consummate handyman for everyone in the family, was always there to help whether it was fixing a car, construction or repairs. He had a gift of being able to tackle just about anything and make it work.
He served in the South Dakota Guard while attending college in Springfield, South Dakota. Later he worked for Northwestern Public Service in Huron, for over 30 years until his retirement.
Larry enjoyed talking to everyone he met, enjoyed traveling and recently took a trip this fall when he and Joan went to the west coast to visit relatives. In general, he had a great zest for life.
Most important to him was his family. He is survived by his wife, Joan of 48 years, and their four sons, Brian of Piedmont, S.D., and Mike, Glen, and Kevin, all of Huron. He doted on his grandchildren, Brandon McBride and his son, Alex; and Ashley McBride and her sons, Kane and Kyle. Also surviving are his brothers, Jim, George (Evie), and Ben (Thetna).
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Jean and Shirley in infancy.
