National Night Out set for August in Huron

HURON – The Huron Police Department is inviting residents to participate in National Night Out, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Campbell Park.
National Night Out is a campaign involving citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses and local officials.
The program is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Last year’s event involved more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 37 million people participated.
Nationally, it will be the 35th annual event.
Police Capt. Mark Johnson said the goal is to make it a citywide block party, including food, informational booths, contests, demonstrations and various youth activities.
“We are looking for individuals to help fill all these categories,” he said.
Anyone interested in participating, helping out or in obtaining more information is asked to contact him at 353-8550 or email markj@huronpolice.com.
