Trevor Nelson added two more feature wins to his growing arsenal of Super Stock trophies this season, while Curt Kranz of Watertown and Chad Becker of Aberdeen split the Late Model doubleheader during Friday night’s action at Brown County Speedway.
Nelson, of Warner, said he actually caught a break last week when a brief rain shower interrupted the Super Stock feature race.
“When it got called, I think we were in last,” Nelson said. “Our experiment didn’t quite work as planned.”
Friday’s adjustments, however, did. Nelson won the make-up feature to begin the night, then picked his way through traffic to win the regular feature later in the evening. Nelson got caught down low on a re-start, but couldn’t find his way around the car ahead of him on the low side. Eventually, he found a seam down the home straightaway, going three-wide past the grandstands to take the lead.
“I just had to pedal through the middle there,” Nelson said.
The double feature gives Nelson six feature wins in nine tries at the track this season.
“A lot of people say I make this look easy,” Nelson said. “But all the effort and work we put in at home. ... We just stayed patient and picked them off one at a time.”
Prior to Nelson’s second victory, it was a a string of first-time victors. Miller’s Zach Pollock earned the win in the Street Stocks, while Brent Dutenhoffer won the Modifieds and Jaren Wibstad was victorious in the Midwest Mods.
Wibstad’s win was his first in three races at the track and second career feature win.
“At the get-go, it actually kind of scared me,” Wibstad said. “Coming out of two, I saw a bunch of guys glide up, and Dawson Zabel, I think, started coming down. I was like, ‘Oh, crap, I’d better gun the car and get into the corner faster. ... I just kept running that bottom line. I knew there was a good lane. I kept that right rear tire hooked up in it as much as I possibly could.”
In the Modified race, Dutenhoffer had to hold off Tony Konold of Clear Lake and Mike Stearns of Aberdeen coming out of a re-start. Stearns had the pressure on the high side, while Konold was charging low, but Dutenhoffer held them both at arm’s length.
“I thought I saw a nose once or twice, must have been Mike on the high side,” Dutenhoffer said. “I just zoned it out and focused on hitting my lines. The car was pretty flawless. I think the driver was more flawed than the car.”
Becker’s win in the regular Late Model feature capped the night. Kranz, who won the earlier feature — last week’s make-up — finished ninth overall in the second race.
Racing action takes about a three-week break at the track before resuming Aug. 21.
